What this article is about
This article explains what an Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP) is and how doctors and dentists in training should prepare.
Who this is for
Resident doctors and dentists in training who are due to have an ARCP or equivalent progression review.
What you need to know
- An ARCP is the formal process used to review whether you are progressing in line with your approved curriculum and training requirements.
- The ARCP panel considers the evidence of progression submitted through your portfolio and other required systems.
- Your evidence is usually reviewed without you attending the panel.
- The panel makes a recommendation based on the evidence available at the time of the review.
- You must submit the required evidence by the stated deadline.
- If evidence is missing, the panel may not be able to confirm progression.
- Your ARCP outcome may affect your next stage of training, additional training time, CCT date or completion of training.
What to do
- Read the ARCP guidance sent by your school, specialty or programme team.
- Check the deadline for submitting evidence.
- Review your curriculum requirements and specialty decision aid, where applicable.
- Make sure your portfolio is complete and clearly organised.
- Upload required evidence into the correct portfolio section.
- Complete and submit your Form R or required self-declaration documentation.
- Check that your educational supervisor report and other required supervisor reports are complete.
- Tell your programme team early if you think evidence will be delayed or if your circumstances have affected your training.
If this does not work
If you cannot submit evidence or are unsure what is required, raise a query as early as possible. Do not wait until the ARCP deadline has passed.
Who to contact
Use the PGMDE Support Portal for ARCP process queries. Contact your Training Programme Director, educational supervisor or specialty team for curriculum and evidence guidance.
