What this article is about
This article explains what usually happens after you resign from a training programme.

Who this is for
Doctors and dentists in training who have resigned or are considering resignation.

What you need to know

  • When you resign from a training programme, your training record will need to be updated.
  • Your National Training Number, Deanery Reference Number or training contract may be withdrawn, depending on your programme and training route.
  • You may still need a final ARCP or record review, depending on timing and local arrangements.
  • Your employer manages employment references, notice period, pay and contract end arrangements.
  • HET may retain training records in line with records management requirements.
  • You should request any documents you need before access to systems changes.

What to do

  1. Confirm your final date in programme and final date with your employer.
  2. Check whether any ARCP, review or sign-off is required before you leave.
  3. Download or request copies of documents you may need for your own records.
  4. Make sure your portfolio, Form R and training evidence are up to date where required.
  5. Ask your employer about employment references, final pay, annual leave and contract queries.
  6. Ask HET about training record queries through the PGMDE Support Portal.

If this does not work
If your training record has not been updated or you are unsure what happens next, raise a query through the PGMDE Support Portal with your final date and current programme details.

Who to contact
Use the PGMDE Support Portal for training record queries. Contact your employer for employment references, notice, pay, contract and HR matters.

What HET can and cannot help with
HET can help with

  • Updating local training records.
  • Confirming the training programme process following resignation.
  • Advising whether a training record review or ARCP process may still apply.
  • Supporting access to training documents where HET holds them and release is appropriate.

HET cannot help with

  • Issuing employment references on behalf of your employer.
  • Managing final pay, annual leave or contract matters.
  • Guaranteeing future training opportunities.
  • Providing legal, financial or immigration advice.
