What this article is about
This article explains what to do if you want to resign from your training programme.

Who this is for
Doctors and dentists in training who are considering resigning from a training programme.

What you need to know

  • Resigning from employment and resigning from a training programme are linked but not always the same process.
  • You must follow your employer’s resignation process for your employment contract.
  • You must also inform the relevant training programme contacts so your training record can be updated.
  • Resignation from a training programme will normally lead to removal from the programme and withdrawal of the relevant training number or training contract.
  • You should seek advice before resigning if you are unsure about the training, employment, visa or future career implications.
  • If you are having difficulty in training, support may be available before you make a final decision.

What to do

  1. Consider discussing your plans with your Training Programme Director, educational supervisor or another appropriate senior training contact.
  2. Check your employment contract and notice period with your employer.
  3. Submit your resignation to your employer in line with their process.
  4. Inform HET through the PGMDE Support Portal that you are resigning from your training programme.
  5. Include your full name, professional registration number, specialty, current placement, proposed last day in post and reason for leaving if you are comfortable providing it.
  6. Confirm whether you have also informed your employer.
  7. Keep written confirmation of your resignation and any final training record information.

If this does not work
If you are unsure whether you want to resign or need urgent advice, contact your Training Programme Director, educational supervisor, employer or support service before submitting a final resignation.

Who to contact
Use the PGMDE Support Portal to inform HET of training programme resignation. Contact your employer for employment resignation, notice period, contract and payroll queries.

What HET can and cannot help with
HET can help with

  • Recording your resignation from the training programme.
  • Updating training records.
  • Advising on training programme processes following resignation.
  • Directing you to the correct support route if you are unsure.

HET cannot help with

  • Resigning from your employment on your behalf.
  • Giving employment, legal, financial or immigration advice.
  • Guaranteeing re-entry to training after resignation.
  • Overriding employer notice requirements.
