I am a Foundation Doctor: Can I apply for ALS courses?

Modified on Fri, 11 Jul at 9:57 AM

Foundation Doctors should apply for ALS courses through their Employing Trusts, who will take care of the course organisation and delivery, and who will claim back for reimbursement from NHSE in their monthly returns. For Foundation Doctors, from 1st September 2024 a £300 cap per person is applied to these courses, as an ALS course is no longer specified as a requirement in the Foundation curriculum.

Employing Trusts should always encourage FDs to attend their locally delivered ALS courses where applicable. If a Trust is unable to offer a FD a place on a locally delivered ALS course and the FD must join a course organised externally, then the PGME team need to request approval from the Foundation School as per discretionary claims. Any expenses paid by the FD can be reimbursed in full, but please note that these would be treated as very exceptional circumstances.
