Additional training time

What this article is about
This article explains when additional training time may be required and how this is considered.

Who this is for
Doctors and dentists in training who may need more time to meet curriculum capabilities or training requirements.

What you need to know

  • Additional training time is normally considered through the ARCP process.
  • An ARCP panel may recommend additional training time where required capabilities have not yet been demonstrated.
  • Additional training time may extend your expected programme end date or CCT date.
  • The outcome form should set out the reasons for the decision and the required development or evidence.
  • Some extensions require approval by senior postgraduate deanery routes.
  • Training extensions are subject to curriculum requirements, programme rules and maximum training time limits.
  • Additional training time should be linked to a clear learning or action plan.

What to do

  1. Review your ARCP outcome and the reasons given.
  2. Discuss the required development with your educational supervisor or Training Programme Director.
  3. Agree a clear action plan with specific evidence, objectives and review dates.
  4. Check whether your CCT date or programme end date has changed.
  5. Keep your employer informed where contract or placement dates may be affected.
  6. Engage with any support, supervision or review arrangements agreed.
  7. Raise a query if the recorded dates or training plan appear incorrect.

If this does not work
If you disagree with the ARCP outcome that recommended additional training time, follow the review or appeal process where available. If your circumstances have changed, tell your programme team as soon as possible.

Who to contact
Use the PGMDE Support Portal for administrative queries about additional training time. Contact your Training Programme Director or educational supervisor for action plan and curriculum queries.
