What this article is about
This article explains how to apply for LTFT training for the first time.
Who this is for
Doctors and dentists in training who want to move from full-time training to LTFT training.
What you need to know
- You must apply through the correct LTFT application route.
- You should normally apply at least 16 weeks before the proposed start date or next rotation change.
- You must inform your Training Programme Director or nominated senior educator before submitting your application.
- Some applications may require supporting evidence.
- Applications submitted with less notice may need escalation and may only be approved in exceptional circumstances.
- Applications made with less than 12 weeks’ notice require additional review.
- Applications within six weeks of rotation are exceptional and may need senior approval.
- Approval is not confirmed until you receive written confirmation.
What to do
- Discuss your intention to apply with your Training Programme Director or nominated senior educator.
- Check the application window and deadline.
- Complete the LTFT application form through the correct route based on below:
- Include your proposed start date, end date if known, requested WTE percentage, programme, training level and placement information.
- Confirm whether you hold a Skilled Worker or Tier 2 visa.
- Attach supporting evidence where required.
- Submit the application at least 16 weeks before the proposed start date where possible.
- Respond promptly if further information is requested.

If this does not work
