What this article is about
This article explains how to request a reduction in your LTFT percentage.
Who this is for
Doctors and dentists in training who are already training full-time or LTFT and want to reduce their WTE.
What you need to know
- A decrease in WTE is a formal LTFT change and must be requested through the correct process.
- You should normally apply at least 16 weeks before the proposed change date or next rotation change.
- A decrease in working hours must meet minimum requirements for recognition of training.
- In most cases, LTFT trainees train between 50% and 80% WTE.
- Requests below 50% WTE are exceptional and require senior review.
- Decreasing WTE may affect placement length, rota design, CCT date, pay, sponsorship and employer arrangements.
- You should not assume the change is approved until written confirmation is issued.
What to do
- Discuss the proposed decrease with your Training Programme Director or nominated senior educator.
- Check the LTFT application window and deadline.
- Confirm the WTE percentage you are requesting.
- Consider how the change may affect training time, placements and CCT date.
- Complete the LTFT application form through the correct route based on below:
- Provide evidence where required.
- Confirm whether you hold a Skilled Worker or Tier 2 visa.
- Wait for written confirmation before changing your working pattern.
If this does not work
If the requested decrease cannot be supported, you may be asked to consider a different WTE, start date or placement arrangement. If the request is declined, you should be told the reason and the relevant review or appeal route.
Who to contact
Use the PGMDE Support Portal for LTFT change queries. Contact your Training Programme Director for educational suitability discussions. Contact your employer for rota, pay, contract and local working pattern queries.
