This article provides information on the updated Dental LTFT process and relevant application windows.
Who this is for
- Dental trainees wishing to apply for Less Than Full Time training
- Trusts and clinical educators considering an LTFT request from a Dental trainee
What you need to know
We are introducing two annual Less Than Full Time (LTFT) application windows across all dental specialties. This approach supports Code of Practice notice requirements to employing trusts and will help programmes and employers plan placements consistently.
Application windows
- For LTFT arrangements starting from March 2027, Applications must be submitted from 13–27 October 2026.
- For LTFT arrangements starting from September 2027, Applications must be submitted from 1–14 March 2027.
- For LTFT arrangements starting from 1 March 2028, applications submitted from 1-15 September 2027.
Applications outside of the windows can be considered only for exceptional circumstances such as personal ill health or caring responsibilities for close family members. Usually these will be considered with 16 weeks’ notice to starting the period of LTFT.
Dental trainees may apply to train LTFT for a well-founded individual reason; however, applications for statutory reasons will continue to be prioritised. Before applying, you should discuss your intention with your Training Programme Director. Applications should be submitted within the established windows; Approval remains subject to educational and placement arrangements and supporting evidence may be required depending on the reason for your request.
What to do
- Discuss your proposed LTFT arrangement, including your preferred whole-time equivalent and start date, with your Training Programme Director.
- Prepare any supporting information requested for your circumstances.
- Submit the appropriate dental LTFT application through the Postgraduate Support Portal: https://lasepgmdesupport.hee.nhs.uk/support/home
Please apply within the window relevant to your intended March or September change and allow as much notice as possible.
