What this article is about
This article explains how to give feedback or raise concerns about a placement.
Who this is for
Doctors and dentists in training who want to give feedback or raise concerns about a training placement.
What you need to know
- Feedback about placements helps training programmes and HET understand where support or review may be needed.
- Concerns may relate to training quality, supervision, workload, rota, wellbeing, reasonable adjustments, local induction, or the suitability of the placement.
- Some concerns should be raised with your employer, while others should be raised through training routes.
- Urgent patient safety, safeguarding, health or personal safety concerns should be raised immediately through the appropriate urgent route.
- Your educational supervisor, Training Programme Director or Head of School may be able to advise on training-related concerns.
- Raising a concern does not automatically change a placement, but it may lead to review, support or escalation.
What to do
- Decide whether the issue is mainly about training, employment, rota, safety, wellbeing or data.
- Raise urgent safety or safeguarding concerns immediately through the appropriate local or emergency route.
- Discuss training concerns with your educational supervisor, Training Programme Director or programme team where appropriate.
- Contact your employer for rota, contract, HR, wellbeing or workplace issues.
- Raise a query through the PGMDE Support Portal if HET needs to review training record, placement or programme information.
- Provide clear information about the placement, issue, dates and impact.
- Keep a record of any advice, actions or agreed support.
If this does not work
If you do not feel your concern has been addressed, ask for escalation through the relevant route. If the issue relates to a formal complaint, use the relevant complaint process.
Who to contact
Use the PGMDE Support Portal for HET training-related placement queries. Contact your educational supervisor, Training Programme Director or programme team for training concerns. Contact your employer for workplace, rota, HR, wellbeing or safety concerns.
What HET can and cannot help with
HET can help with
- Routing training-related placement concerns to the correct team.
- Checking HET-held placement and training records.
- Supporting escalation where a concern relates to training arrangements.
- Advising whether another process may be more appropriate.
HET cannot help with
- Replacing employer HR, rota, occupational health or safeguarding processes.
- Providing emergency support.
- Guaranteeing a placement change.
- Resolving concerns that sit wholly with another organisation without their involvement.
