What this article is about
This article explains how rotations are planned and when doctors and dentists in training should expect to receive placement information.
Who this is for
Doctors and dentists in training waiting for rotation or placement information, and Trust colleagues supporting placement planning.
What you need to know
- Rotations are planned by specialty and programme teams to meet curriculum, training and service requirements.
- Training Programme Directors are responsible for planning placements in line with curriculum requirements and individual training needs.
- Placements must be in approved training posts and locations.
- HET works with schools, specialties and Trusts to upload and share rotation information.
- The standard expectation is that placement information is shared with trainees and employers by the Code of Practice 12-week deadline.
- Some information may be shared earlier with employers as forecast information, but it may still change before the final 12-week point.
- Changes after publication should be exceptional and may require a formal change process.
What to do
- Check communications from your school, specialty or programme team.
- Make sure your contact details are up to date.
- Tell your Training Programme Director and HET about any approved changes that may affect your placement, such as LTFT, OOP, statutory leave, special circumstances or IDT.
- Wait for formal placement notification before making firm plans.
- Contact your employer when instructed to complete onboarding, rota or pre-employment actions.
- Raise a query if you have not received your placement details close to the expected publication point.
If this does not work
If you think your placement information is missing, incorrect or delayed, raise a query through the PGMDE Support Portal with your full name, professional registration number, specialty, training level and expected rotation date.
Who to contact
Use the PGMDE Support Portal for placement and rotation queries. Contact your employer for contract, rota, payroll, HR or pre-employment checks.
What HET can and cannot help with
HET can help with
- Checking whether placement information has been issued or uploaded.
- Reviewing HET-held training and placement records.
- Directing queries to the relevant school, specialty or rotation team.
- Supporting corrections where HET-held data is wrong.
HET cannot help with
- Guaranteeing a preferred placement, Trust, site or rota.
- Changing placements outside the approved rotation process.
- Managing employer contracts, rota design, pay or HR checks.
- Confirming placements before they have been formally agreed.
