What this article is about
This article explains how reasonable adjustments are considered, agreed and recorded.

Who this is for
Applicants, doctors and dentists in training who have requested, or need to request, reasonable adjustments.

What you need to know

  • The route for agreeing adjustments depends on whether the adjustment relates to recruitment, training, events, assessment or employment.
  • Adjustments should be discussed with the relevant team responsible for the process.
  • Some adjustments may require supporting information or occupational health advice.
  • Agreed adjustments should be recorded clearly enough that the relevant people can apply them.
  • Only necessary information should be shared.
  • Adjustments may need to be reviewed if your circumstances, role, placement or training stage changes.

What to do

  1. Submit your adjustment request through the correct route.
  2. Provide relevant supporting information if requested.
  3. Discuss practical options with the relevant team.
  4. Ask how the adjustment will be recorded and who will be told.
  5. Keep a copy of any agreed adjustment plan or confirmation.
  6. Review the adjustment if your needs or placement changes.

If this does not work
If the adjustment has not been applied, raise this as soon as possible with the team responsible for the process. If it relates to employment, contact your employer.

Who to contact
Use the PGMDE Support Portal for training-related adjustment queries. Contact your employer for workplace adjustments. Contact the recruitment team for recruitment adjustments.

What HET can and cannot help with
HET can help with

  • Recording training-related adjustments where HET is responsible.
  • Liaising with programme teams where appropriate.
  • Explaining which process applies.
  • Supporting review where a training-related adjustment needs updating.

HET cannot help with

  • Recording or approving employer workplace adjustments outside HET processes.
  • Sharing sensitive information beyond what is needed.
  • Providing occupational health, legal, financial or immigration advice.
  • Guaranteeing adjustments that cannot be reasonably or safely implemented.
