F1 to F2 Supporting Trainees Entering Practice (STEP)

Modified on Wed, 27 Nov 2019 at 10:52 AM

All Foundation trainees are required to complete a STEP (Supporting Trainees Entering Practice) form, which was previously known as Transfer of Information (ToI), before the beginning of both their F1 and F2 years.

The process is supportive and designed for doctors to highlight to their Foundation Training Programme Director (FTPD) issues that might be relevant to their training, such as academic, health, social or psychological difficulties.  This is to allow appropriate support to be put in place as and where required.

The information in the STEP form is confidential, and will only be accessed by relevant Foundation School staff and the FTPD who is responsible for your training.  It is necessary for a medical school clinical advisor or official to countersign the F1 form and the F1 FTPD to countersign the F2 form.  No information will be passed beyond these boundaries without your agreement.

It is for you to determine how much specific information you give in regard to any issues.  It is important to understand however that withholding information that may impact on safe patient care or giving false information regarding your academic career would be inconsistent with the GMC guidance on probity, and any identification of such activity would be reported to the GMC.

If you are moving between F1 to F2 out of sync you can request a STEP form here.

Trainees who are due to move in August will automatically be sent an invite.
