I am a Paediatrics trainee - how do I find out about my placements?

Modified on Tue, 18 Mar at 11:40 AM

The TPDs are responsible for allocating placements for both London and KSS, which is based on matching at Level 2 and above.

London

Level 1 trainees are allocated their three-year placements at the recruitment stage. Going forward this will change due to Shape of Training and the new curriculum.

A matching evening occurs early in the year, usually early in the year, which is advertised on: Level 3 Training FAQs – London School of Paediatrics).  Matching guidance and information will be sent out by NHSE around 6 months before the start of the rotation.

Trainees have the opportunity to meet college representatives from most of the trusts within the region before filling in a matching form.

Trainees need to complete a matching form where they are able to choose hospitals in order of their preference.  Level 2 trainees will receive their two-year placements after completing this form at ST3. Level 3 trainees will receive their three-year placements after completing this form at ST5.

ST3 trainees progressing into ST4 in either Sept or March must complete the matching Form and also any ST4 trainees who do not have their posts set up for all of their level 2. This also applies to any ST3/4 trainees currently on maternity leave who needs placement on return from mat leave.

The matching paperwork for ST6/7/8 is for trainees who will be going to Level 3 training from September or March of the following year and all current ST5 trainees and any ST6/7 trainee who do not have their posts set up for the rest of their training. Current ST8 trainees who require grace period placement are also required to complete the matching form.

If you have any queries regarding your placement, you will need to email your TPD.

KSS

Level 1 trainees are allocated their first two year placements at the recruitment stage. Going forward this may change due to Shape of Training and the new curriculum.

Trainees will need to complete a preference form at ST2 for a ST3 placement. Level 2 trainees will receive their two-year placement after completing a preference form at ST3.

ST5 moving to ST6 trainees have a choice of being placed in a London hospital and will also be completing a preference form. ST7&8 placements are given after completing a preference form at the end of ST6. Trainees requiring placements will have their e-portfolio reviewed and scored by the TPDs. They will then be allocated based on their scores and preferences.

If you have any queries regarding your placement, you will need to email your TPD.

How do I receive notification of my confirmed placement?

Trainees and trusts are informed of confirmed placements 12 weeks before the rotation date. This is usually in late May/June for the September rotations, and in December for March rotations.
