Modified on Fri, 25 Sep at 12:06 PM

What this article is about
This article explains how to apply for OOP and what information you may need to provide.

Who this is for
Doctors and dentists in training who want to apply for time out of programme.

What you need to know

  • OOP applications must be submitted through the approved process.
  • You should normally apply at least six months before the proposed start date.
  • You must discuss your application with your Training Programme Director before applying.
  • You may need support from your educational supervisor, research supervisor or host organisation, depending on the OOP type.
  • You may need to provide evidence, such as proof of appointment, research details, supervisor support or College or Faculty information.
  • If your OOP is intended to count towards CCT, prospective approval may be needed before the OOP starts.
  • You should not assume OOP is approved until you receive written confirmation.

What to do

  1. Read the OOP guidance for your region and specialty.
  2. Discuss your plans with your Training Programme Director.
  3. Confirm which OOP type applies.
  4. Gather the required evidence.
  5. Complete the OOP application form through the correct support route.
  6. Include your proposed start date, end date, placement or activity details, supervisor details and whether the OOP should count towards training.
  7. Submit the application by the required deadline.
  8. Respond promptly to any request for further evidence.
  9. Wait for written approval before resigning from a placement, making travel arrangements or signing external contracts.

If this does not work
If your application is incomplete, submitted late or missing evidence, it may be delayed, held as conditional or not approved. If you need to amend your application, raise this as soon as possible.

Who to contact
Use the PGMDE Support Portal for OOP application queries. Contact your Training Programme Director for specialty and training approval discussions.
