How to apply for IDT (step-by-step)

Modified on Thu, 15 Oct at 3:11 PM

What this article is about
This article explains the main steps involved in applying for an Inter-Deanery Transfer.

Who this is for
Doctors in specialty training who are considering applying for an IDT.

What you need to know

  • IDT applications must be submitted through the national IDT process.
  • Applications are only considered during published application windows.
  • You must read the eligibility criteria and application guidance before applying.
  • Applications must include the required supporting evidence.
  • Submitting an application does not guarantee a transfer.

What to do

  1. Check that the IDT process applies to your training programme.
  2. Read the national IDT eligibility criteria and applicant guidance.
  3. Confirm whether you have enough time remaining in training to apply.
  4. Gather the evidence required for your application.
  5. Submit your application during the published IDT application window.
  6. Keep a copy of your submitted application and supporting documents.
  7. Monitor your email for updates from the national IDT team.
  8. Do not assume that a transfer has been agreed unless you receive formal confirmation.

If this does not work
If you miss the application window, you will normally need to wait for the next published window. If your circumstances are exceptional and cannot wait, you should seek advice through the appropriate support route.

Who to contact
For application queries, use the IDT query route on the PGMDE Support Portal.

Applications must be submitted via this form but only when the window is open
