Flexible training options alongside LTFT, OOP and SuppoRTT

What this article is about
This article explains how flexible training options such as LTFT, OOP and SuppoRTT may be used alongside other training processes.

Who this is for
Doctors and dentists in training who are considering changes to their working pattern, time away from training, or support when returning.

What you need to know

  • LTFT, OOP and SuppoRTT are separate processes with different purposes.
  • LTFT reduces your whole-time equivalent while you remain in training.
  • OOP allows approved time away from the training programme.
  • SuppoRTT supports safe and effective return to training after a period away.
  • Special circumstances, reasonable adjustments, statutory leave and employer processes may also apply depending on your situation.
  • Approval for one process does not automatically approve another.
  • These arrangements may affect placements, rota, ARCP, CCT date, pay, contract or sponsorship.
  • You should seek advice early if more than one process may apply.

What to do

  1. Identify what you need: reduced hours, time away, placement consideration, return support or employer support.
  2. Discuss your circumstances with your Training Programme Director or educational supervisor.
  3. Contact your employer if the issue affects pay, contract, sickness, rota or HR.
  4. Raise a query through the PGMDE Support Portal if you are unsure which HET process applies.
  5. Submit the correct application or support form for each process required.
  6. Keep copies of approvals and correspondence.
  7. Check your training record after changes are confirmed.

If this does not work
If you apply through the wrong route, your request may be delayed. Ask for advice early if your situation involves more than one process.

Who to contact
Use the PGMDE Support Portal for HET training process queries. Contact your Training Programme Director or educational supervisor for training advice. Contact your employer for pay, contract, HR, rota and local working arrangements.

What HET can and cannot help with
HET can help with

  • Advising which HET training process may apply.
  • Routing LTFT, OOP, SuppoRTT or special circumstances queries.
  • Updating HET-held records where approved changes are confirmed.
  • Directing queries to employer, sponsorship or programme routes where needed.

HET cannot help with

  • Combining processes without the required approvals.
  • Managing employer pay, contract, rota or HR processes.
  • Guaranteeing a preferred placement, rota or working pattern.
  • Providing occupational health, legal, immigration or financial advice.
